Howdy Grapeviners!
Any pet lovers out there? 🐶🐈 This Saturday, it’s your chance to show your furry friends how much you care by taking them to get blessed in the annual Fiestas de San Antón, the patron saint of animals. The event will be celebrated in different ways in pueblos around Granada, from Monachil to Gaudix, but it’s likely to include mass, mass-dancing and mass-eating of the winter-warmer stew: Olla de San Antón.
Meanwhile, Ogijarians are going against the grain to honour their patron saint in the Fiestas de San Sebastián this Sunday - but there’ll still be an olla. 👍
Elsewhere this week: great films at La Madraza and the Filmoteca de Andalucía (see below), a performance by Estrella Morente, Granada’s Flamenco superstar, a Britpop tribute concert, an escape room at Museo Casa de los Tiros… and enough rain to help fill Granada’s first artificial lake. 🌧️

Can you name the Granada-loving Brit? 👇 Answer at the bottom of the email.

🎵 Musical Highlights:
Ever tried finding videos of appropriately-dressed positive female role-model musicians to play to your four-year-old daughter? It’s not easy! Tiny Desk Concerts have become a go-to for us to achieve this goal. This week, I’m delighted to base my picks of the week around that theme…
Dave’s Faves™ this week are Iannis Anisakis, playing Barrio Crudo (dubbed Granada’s Tiny Desk Concerts by the organisers). This anarchic trio mix drones, noise and banging electronic craziness much of which is performed on homemade instruments. It won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, but that barely matters as there’ll only be space for 25 people! (Have a listen). We might predict a slightly higher turnout for Eladio Carrión. The Latin trap/hip-hop megastar in his own right regularly collaborates with such whopping names as Bad Bunny, 50 Cent and Lil Wayne. (Tiny Desk Concert). Saxophonist and giant of flamenco jazz, Antonio Lizana is a major figure in the disproportionately large hall of fame that could exist in his birth-place “La Isla” of San Fernando (Tiny Desk Concert). If all this sounds a bit high-brow, and you’d rather sing Don’t look back in anger with a pint of bitter raised high and a tear in your eye, the Brit Festival by Neon Collective will take you back to a more innocent time when musicians had egos that would never fit behind a desk of any size.

Joe Strummer, frontman of The Clash, had a personal connection with Granada, where he spent long periods, living in the Realejo in the 1980s and 1990s. Drawn by the city’s rebellious spirit, history, and music scene, Granada became a place of refuge and inspiration for him, influencing songs like Spanish Bombs and his later work with the Mescaleros. His bond with the city is still celebrated today, most visibly through a plaque in Realejo, a tribute to how Granada adopted him as one of its own!
