Hey Grapeviners!
December’s rolling in and there’s a buzz in the air. This could only be due to the arrival of the 10th issue of Granada Grapevine! (For perspective, Beethoven never finished his 10th symphony. Let that sink in…) To celebrate this gargantuan achievement, we thought we’d organise a gathering and take the opportunity to meet some of you wonderful people in person. If you’re really lucky, you might even get to try one of our legendary mince pies!
🧺🍷🧑🎄 Festive Picnic | Parque Tico Medina | Sun 14 Dec, 12h - Everyone welcome! Wrap up warm. Bring some food or drink to share. (Location/time may change due to weather.) Join Whatsapp group for updates.
Anyway, enough about next week, let’s take a look at this week’s events… We have two public holidays: Sat 6 is Día de la Constitución and Mon 8 is Día de la Inmaculada Concepción. There are festive activities galore; festive markets, festive Flamenco shows and a 1967 British film about the festering resentment between the classes… There’s a whole host of live music, including Nikki (and our older daughter’s) new favourite Granada band, Elsa Bhör!

Who’s this Mexican dude and what’s he got to do with Granada? Answer below. 👇

🎵 Musical Highlights:
There are international collaborations aplenty this week. Senegalese percussion-based jazz with Sabar Meets Jazz, Sicilian flute-based Jazz with Ermanno Panta & Banda Zeitun. Cuban music is performed by Mane Ferret, and honoured by Diego el Cigala (celebrating his collaboration with Cuban Piano legend, Bebo Valdés). Rodriguez Celtic Band play, you guessed it, Celtic music from Northern Spain, Ireland, Scotland and other cold and rainy places. Sun-blessed Australian rockers The Chevelles describe themselves as “The criminals Australia wants to send back to England and call it even”. If they were sent back to England, they could check out MFC Chicken, a London band playing American music, named after a London chicken shop named after an American chain. For those that prefer their music local, Los Mutang Kikis rap with a Granadino accent and Elsa Bhör please crowds with a Granadino accent.

See you next Wednesday! If you enjoyed this newsletter, please share it with a Granada resident who is still fumbling around clueless about what’s going on. And, for a behind the scenes look at what’s happening at Granada Grapevine, check out our Instagram! (Yes, we’ve jumped on the bandwagon.)

Francisco de Icaza (1863–1925) was a Mexican poet, critic and diplomat who spent much of his career in Spain and married a Spanish woman, Beatriz de León y Loynaz, who had grown up in Granada. His connection to the city is best known through his famous lines: “Dale limosna, mujer, que no hay en la vida nada como la pena de ser ciego en Granada”. (Give him alms, woman, for there is nothing in life like the sorrow of being blind in Granada.) The quote became part of Granada’s cultural identity, and in 2023 he was posthumously named an Honorary Son of the city.
