Hey Grapeviners!
Ever dreamed of starring in a movie? Ever felt that deep, noble urge to help shape your city’s cultural identity in the eyes of the world? Well, fret not - this Sunday, you can do exactly that.
That is, of course, if you hadn’t already made weekend plans before Tuesday afternoon, when the project was suddenly announced 🧐 - along with a whole host of other activities for Día Internacional del Patrimonio Mundial. (Naturally, our thoughts are with anyone who had just scheduled their “what’s on this week” newsletter at that point 😒).
Anyway… more about your budding acting career below 👇

Name the famous Granadina. Answer at the bottom of the email. 👇

🎵 Musical Highlights: Dave’s favourite this week is Za! (on Thursday), who offer up some of the most interesting experimental music to grace the Granada live scene since we started this thing - and it’s free! If you love grunge and your social life smells like teen bedroom, be so happy, coz today you found your friends, they’re in your head at Planta Baja on Friday and Sala El Tren on Saturday with Nirvana tribute-acts on two consecutive nights, plus covers of other 90s bands on Sat. Local due Sosoritnem are a rising talent playing catchy indie-pop on Friday. British psychobilly pioneers, The Meteors (est. 1980!) perform fun vintage sounds on Monday. Wannabe jazz fans, head over to Asociación Ool Ya Koo on Sunday for Aprende a Escuchar Jazz where they’ll teach you how to make all the right noises at all the right times when listening to jazz.

🚌 Transport: Roadworks on San Anton and surrounding areas, and Avenida Cervantes, result in diversions (some bus reroutes) and extra-erratic taxi-driving. On Sunday, Granada marks International World Heritage Day with a bunch of free family-friendly activities, including guided walking tours, storytelling sessions, a photography competition and gymkana (14-16 Nov). See all activities and reserve in advance here.
🎥 Filmmaking Event: The Hand & The Key 🖐️🗝️
Local filmmaker, Manuel Sicilia, invites citizens of Granada to take part in a unique community filmmaking experience inspired by one of the legends of the Alhambra. This Sunday at 12:30h participants will gather in Plaza Nueva and walk together to the Puerta de la Justicia, being filmed along the way and becoming part of the story. The resulting film will form part of Granada’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2031.

🎄 Christmas Stuff: Christmas jumpers are already in the shops and you’ll notice more festive stuff appearing in the coming week. (Nevada’s famous 57-metre tree was erected at the beginning of October!). In the centre, the Christmas Markets are set to open 1st Dec and the city is scheduled to switch on its Christmas lights on Sat 29th Nov with a ceremony at Plaza del Carmen at 20.30h. (Let’s hope it’s not delayed like last year!)

We hope you enjoyed this week’s newsletter. If you did, please share it with a friend!

“Granada is part of my skin, my eyes, my hair, my singing, my food, my children, my parents… I will always return to Granada.” - Estrella Morente
The lady at the top of the newsletter today is Estrella Morente, a celebrated flamenco singer from Granada. Born in 1980 into one of the city’s most famous flamenco families - her father is the late Enrique Morente and her mother the dancer Aurora Carbonell. Known for her powerful, emotional voice, Estrella has become an international ambassador for the city’s cultural heritage. She is known for performing the haunting flamenco song “Volver” in Pedro Almodóvar’s acclaimed 2006 film of the same name (while Penélope Cruz appeared to sing it on screen). She also features on Rosalía’s recent critically-acclaimed album, Luz, on the track “La Rumba Del Perdón”.
