Description
Translated from the organiser's original listing
The Palacio de los Condes de Gabia presents Vicente Brito. La mirada contemporanea, an ambitious tribute exhibition organised by the Diputacion de Granada's Department of Culture and Education. Located in the Sala Alta, the show marks the fifth anniversary of the artist's death after nearly fifty years of life and work in Granada. Born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, in 1930, Brito studied architecture in Havana before moving to Madrid and then New York. He eventually settled permanently in Granada, where he practised as an architect while developing his painting, inspired by the city's light and mysticism. A disciple of Wifredo Lam in Havana, Brito gradually refined his language in line with international abstraction and minimalism, guided by a deeply existentialist philosophy. The exhibition brings together 55 works in a wide range of formats and techniques, drawn from public and private collections including the Real Academia de Bellas Artes Nuestra Senora de las Angustias, Ayuntamiento de Granada, Fundacion Rodriguez-Acosta, Universidad de Granada and over twenty private collectors. Rather than following a chronological order, the show is organised around open, cross-cutting themes, structured by colour — beginning with red as the visual axis — and continuing through geometry, graphic work and the unfinished process of his final painting. Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 11am-2pm and 6pm-9pm. Sundays 11am-2pm. Free entry.
